The Entebbe Day
Experience
Most people sit in the hotel and wait. These people do not.
THE EXPERIENCE
Entebbe is where Uganda starts. Most travelers never actually see it.
Kasenyi fishing village at 6am is one of the most visually alive places in Uganda. Wooden boats coming in with the night’s catch, fish laid out on the grass, women sorting and selling before the sun is fully up. An entire economy moving while the hotel guests are still sleeping.
The Uganda Botanical Gardens is where Jane Goodall conducted some of her earliest chimpanzee research before moving to Gombe. The resident chimpanzees are still there. So are the grey crowned cranes, the giant forest squirrels, and the fig trees that have been growing for over a century.
Lake Victoria at sunset from the right spot on the Entebbe peninsula is the kind of image that looks fabricated. We know the spot. This day trip is also the ideal first or last day before or after a longer safari.

BOOK THIS TRIPWHAT THE DAY LOOKS LIKE
Hour by hour in Entebbe.
6:00 AM
Kasenyi fishing village.
The catch comes in at dawn. This is not a tourist attraction. It is a working landing site and you are a guest in it. Bring your camera. Move slowly. Buy a cup of tea from the woman selling it near the boats. Spend 90 minutes here before the activity winds down and the heat starts.
8:00 AM
Uganda Wildlife Education Centre.
Uganda’s national zoo is also a rescue and rehabilitation centre for animals that cannot be returned to the wild. Shoebill storks. Chimpanzees. White rhinos. Lions. Rothschild giraffes. Unlike conventional zoos, UWEC operates conservation programs and the enclosures are large and naturalistic. This takes 2 hours at a relaxed pace.
11:00 AM
Entebbe Botanical Gardens.
A 40-hectare forest reserve on the shore of Lake Victoria. The resident chimpanzee troop moves through the garden most mornings. Birding here is exceptional. The gardens are also strangely peaceful — most visitors spend 30 minutes and then wonder why they did not budget three hours.
1:30 PM
Lunch in Entebbe town.
We eat where the locals eat. Not a tourist restaurant. Good food, real prices, and a conversation with whoever is sitting next to you.
3:00 PM
Mabamba Swamp for the shoebill.
Optional add-on at $20 extra per person. The shoebill stork is one of the most prehistoric-looking birds alive and Mabamba is the most reliable place in Uganda to find one. A canoe takes you into the papyrus swamp for a 2-hour search. The bird is enormous, patient, and completely unbothered by your presence.
6:00 PM
Lake Victoria sunset.
We know a spot on the peninsula where the lake stretches to the horizon and the light turns everything gold for about 45 minutes. This is where the day ends. Then we take you back to your hotel or the airport.
