Most Uganda safari advice is written by people who have never been.

We are based in Kampala. We travel these roads every week. What follows is what we actually tell people when they message us asking how to plan a Uganda trip from scratch.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

When is the best time for a safari in Uganda?

Uganda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons. The dry seasons are December to February and June to September. During dry season the tracks are accessible, animals concentrate around water sources, and vegetation is lower which makes wildlife easier to spot.

June to September is the most popular window. July and August in particular are peak season — gorilla permits sell out months in advance and accommodation gets fully booked at the main destinations.

April and May are wet season. Park tracks in some areas become impassable. Wildlife is harder to find in tall grass. But permits are cheaper at $600 for gorillas, accommodation costs 20 to 30 percent less, and the parks have almost no other tourists. If you can handle rain and mud, wet season is genuinely special.

Our recommendation: June for the best combination of good conditions and permit availability. Book 4 to 6 months in advance for June travel.

HOW MANY DAYS

How many days do you actually need for a Uganda safari?

Five days minimum to do one park properly without rushing. The drives are long — Murchison is 5 to 6 hours from Kampala, Bwindi is 9 hours, Queen Elizabeth is 5 to 6 hours. Every itinerary loses a day at each end to travel.

Seven to ten days lets you combine two parks comfortably. The most popular combination is Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi — 6 to 7 days covers both without brutal back-to-back drives.

Fourteen days gives you the full circuit: Entebbe, Murchison Falls, Kibale chimps, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi gorillas. This is the Uganda that most people mean when they say they want to see everything.

The most common mistake: trying to fit Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi into 7 days. Technically possible. Practically miserable. You spend more time in the vehicle than in the park.

COSTS AND BUDGETS

How much does a Uganda safari cost in 2026?

Budget travelers sharing vehicles and staying in basic accommodation: $200 to $350 per person per day.

Mid-range travelers in comfortable lodges with private vehicles: $350 to $600 per person per day.

Luxury travelers in premium lodges: $600 to $1,200 per person per day.

The gorilla permit at $800 is the single biggest cost and it sits on top of everything else. On a 3-day Bwindi trip at mid-range, the permit represents roughly 40 percent of your total package cost.

Where the money goes: Permits and park fees are fixed government costs. Your vehicle and driver-guide is the second biggest cost. Accommodation is the most flexible — the gap between a $40 per night bandcamp and a $400 per night luxury lodge is enormous and both deliver the same gorilla experience.

BOOKING PERMITS

How do you book a gorilla permit in Uganda?

Gorilla permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You can book directly through the UWA website or through a licensed tour operator. When you book through us, we handle the UWA application, payment, and confirmation. You receive written evidence of your confirmed permit before any payment leaves your account.

Permit scams do exist. If an operator cannot provide written UWA confirmation with a permit number, walk away. Your permit should show your name, the date, the gorilla group, and a UWA reference number. We show you exactly what legitimate confirmation looks like before you book.

How far in advance: 6 to 12 months for July and August. 3 to 6 months for other peak season months. Low season months have walk-in availability but we still recommend booking at least 6 weeks ahead to secure your preferred sector and accommodation.
