Murchison Falls
Experience
The Nile. The lions. The falls that split the world in two.
THE EXPERIENCE
The Nile narrows to seven meters. Then it falls 43.
You hear Murchison Falls before you reach it. The sound builds as you walk the trail from the top parking area and then suddenly the entire Nile is forcing itself through a gap you could throw a stone across. The mist hits your face. Nothing prepares you for the scale of it.
The drive from Kampala takes 5 to 6 hours. We leave at 7am and reach the park in time for an afternoon game drive. This is Uganda’s largest national park and it holds the country’s biggest lion population, large elephant herds, Rothschild giraffes, and hippos so dense on the river banks that the boat has to slow down to navigate past them.
The drive is honest. The experience is worth it.

What three days at Murchison actually looks like.
DAY ONE
Kampala to Murchison via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Depart Kampala at 7am. The road north takes you through Kampala traffic, then opens into flat savannah within the hour. At the halfway point, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda to see wild white rhinos on foot. It adds 90 minutes and it is worth every one of them. Arrive at the park gate by mid-afternoon. Check in. Afternoon game drive along the Nile. Sundowners watching hippos before dinner at your lodge.
DAY TWO
The falls. The boat. The lions..
6am wake up. Full morning game drive in the northern sector where lion prides are most active at sunrise. Return to lodge for breakfast. 10am boat cruise on the Nile from Paraa — three hours of hippos, crocodiles, and elephant herds drinking on the bank. After lunch, walk to the top of the falls. Stand at the edge. The afternoon game drive back covers the same ground with different light and different animals. Dinner at lodge.
DAY THREE
Morning drive and return to Kampala.
Early morning game drive before the heat. Breakfast. Depart by 10am. Stop at Ziwa again if you want more rhino time. Back in Kampala by 5 to 6pm depending on traffic.

GOOD TO KNOW
Can you see the Big Five in Murchison Falls?
Murchison has lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and hippos. Rhinos are at Ziwa Sanctuary just outside the park — we stop there on Day One. So technically yes, with Ziwa included, this trip covers all five. Murchison does not have rhinos inside the park itself. Any operator who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you.
The Rothschild giraffe at Murchison is one of the most endangered subspecies in the world. About 60 percent of all remaining Rothschild giraffes live in this park. That is not in most brochures.
